Organization
Student-led, industry-connected
LiU Formula Student is a non-profit association at Linköping University. We bring together around a hundred students each year to design, build, and race an electric Formula Student car through close collaboration with faculty and local industry.
Who we are
We exist to give students hands-on engineering and leadership experience while representing Linköping University on international Formula Student grids. Working in cross-functional teams, our members handle everything from sponsorship and project planning to design, manufacturing, and validation of a competition-ready vehicle.
Partnering with local companies, alumni, and faculty helps us access expertise, equipment, and mentorship. In return, we provide future engineers who have practiced real-world collaboration, problem-solving, and communication.

History
Our journey began in June 2010 with a simple question: “Have you heard about Formula Student?” A group of five to seven students reached out to the university, explored partnerships, and secured early sponsors while figuring out how to form the association. We set our first goals—fundraising, study visits to CRR and KTH, and a solid structure—and soon welcomed around 25 members to build the first car.
More than a decade later, the yearly build cycle remains the heartbeat of LiU Formula Student, with each cohort adding new ideas and knowledge to the cars that follow.
Alumni
Our alumni have gone on to pursue PhDs and roles at companies like SpaceX, Sauber, and Aston Martin. Many stay connected as mentors or partners, helping us broaden our reach across the university, contribute to courses, and inspire future students to join LiU Formula Student.
How we are structured
The organization is led by a project leader and a management group that align the yearly goals, budget, and schedule. Twelve subgroups span every part of the car and our operations—from aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics to electronics, sponsorship, marketing, and internal systems.
Each subgroup has clear ownership and collaborates with others through shared design reviews, integration milestones, and testing plans. This setup keeps the team nimble while giving every member a defined space to learn and contribute.

From aerodynamics and chassis to sponsorship and marketing, every part of the car and organization is covered by a dedicated team.
